High consumption of this material leads to the production of low-cost activated carbon from agricultural wastes such as walnut shells, rice husks and corn husks. In this project, activated carbon was synthesized from walnut shell biomass using green chemical activation. For this purpose, phosphoric acid was used as the activating agent with a ratio of 1:3 of walnut shell biomass to the activating agent. The activation and carbonization steps were carried out simultaneously in a tube furnace at 800°C under a nitrogen atmosphere. In order to characterize the synthesized activated carbon, XRD, Raman, FTIR, SEM and nitrogen adsorption and desorption analysis were used. The resulting activated carbon powder exhibited a specific surface area of 1560 m2/g with a total pore volume of 1.4 cm3/g.
